A Snippet from SCAVENGER VANISHES

You've probably heard the expression: Cheer up! Things will get better.
Well in Alisha's world, things just keep getting worse.
And worser and worsest. (Bad Grammar intentional)
Finally, Alisha has no option but to disappear.

Colonel Dryer’s look turned hard and cold. “The general forbid Jack to provide you solace.”

“The clothes are not mine, sir,” Alisha replied.

“Whose are they?” he asked, clearly not believing her.

“Sir,” Casey barked. “I loaned Private Kane clothes, sir.”

Colonel Dryer stepped forward and observed Casey for a moment. “Well, it appears you gave Private Kane your best sleepwear. Is that not so, Private Jones?”

Admit nothing, Alisha prayed.

“Sir, no, sir,” Casey replied. “These are much warmer, sir. I like them better, sir.”

The colonel leaned in very close. “I don’t believe you, Private. So ask for your clothes back.”

After a moment of hesitation, Casey barked a request to have her sleepwear returned.

The bastard had been dying to humiliate Alisha since she’d made colonel.

“At ease, all of you,” Colonel Dryer barked, and returned to Alisha. “Give the private back her property. Now, Kane.”

He wanted her to beg, to blush, to show some hint of discomfort at being forced to strip down naked in front of her squad. Instead, she gave him her most defiant “I don’t give a shit” look. She pulled off the top, slipped off the bottoms, and neatly folded them before handing them to Casey. “Thanks.” She pretended to feel no discomfort or embarrassment while wearing nothing but her panties.

Casey, on the other hand, looked as if she were going to cry as she took the pajamas back. Alisha noticed that despite the colonel declaring at ease, the rest of her squad, all young men, had remained at attention, with their eyes diverted. She was impressed by their willpower. Whenever Jack took off his shirt, she couldn’t resist looking.

“Does this excite you, Kane?” Colonel Dryer asked. “Your nipples are hard.”

“Nothing here is exciting me, sir. It’s just cold.”

His eyes narrowed, then he turned and left the quarters.

Heaven? Not so much. Scavenger Vanishes, Bk 3 snippet

When Alisha woke, she thought she was in heaven. Everything was white. As she focused on the fluorescent lighting, she changed her mind.
“Good, you’re awake,” Sandy said as she placed a thermometer in Alisha’s mouth. “That was a pretty stupid stunt you pulled last night.”
Alisha stared in confusion as Sandy proceeded to give her a lecture on hypothermia. When the medic finally pulled the thermometer from Alisha’s mouth, she tried to sit up. “How did I get here, and what were you told happened to me?”
Sandy gave her one of those “don’t even try to pull the wool over my eyes” looks. “You were brought in by several of your young men friends, who said that while giving them lap dances you had started shivering uncontrollably.”
“Lap dances!”
“Look,” Sandy said. “I don’t give a damn if you screw every man in this camp. In fact, it’s rather refreshing to hear of a female Ryder with a worse reputation than Jack’s. However, take some advice. It’s winter. If you want to do lap dances, don’t do them outside in the buff. You don’t have enough body fat to protect you from the cold.”
Alisha was speechless. She was going to kill Benson.
“Now, your captain’s here to take you back to your quarters. I need this room in a half hour. Anything you wish to do before that is not my concern as long as you keep your activity limited to the exam table, and don’t play with the supplies.”
The second Benson entered the room, Alisha hit him with a jar of cotton swabs. “You told the medic I was giving you a lap dance?”
Benson rubbed his chest where the jar had struck. “It was all I could think of. Don’t throw anything else, and I’ll explain,” he promised.
Alisha couldn’t imagine any explanation that would satisfy her, but she let him approach and try.
“I knew you were going into hypothermia, but if Colonel Dryer were implicated, I’d be done for. The colonel would no doubt receive a reprimand for his part in it, but he’d still be my colonel. Except now he’d be a pissed-off colonel, and I’d be his rabbit. So I had to come up with something the medic would believe that in no way implicated the colonel but would explain how you came to be wearing no clothes. Given your reputation, I said lap dances.”
“What reputation?” Alisha demanded.
“Well…” Benson smiled awkwardly. “You know…”
“No,” Alisha replied. “Tell me.”
“Well, first there was Colonel Logan, then you dropped Logan for Sparkes, which we all understood, then there was Ben, then there was you and Colonel Logan in the tunnel, before Sparkes found you. Then you and Logan right before he left, and then Tucker in tunnel this morning.”
“You can stop now,” Alisha said. No wonder the medic had believed Alisha wanted to sleep with every man in the camp. Rumor had it that she had slept with every man in the camp. She sighed. “So now we add lap dances to the pile of BS.”
“I didn’t see what harm it could do.”
“No, you’re evidently right. My reputation is pretty well dragging the bottom. I must be the biggest joke in the Corps.” She looked up at the ceiling, trying not to cry.
“No!” Benson assured her. “We know you’re something special. Normal conventions don’t apply to you, any more than normal aerodynamics or Corps regulations. You do your own thing and we just watch and marvel.”

A new snippet from Scavenger Falters, releasing 12/30/16

Today, I'm sharing a bit from book 2, Scavenger Falters, releasing 12/30/16.

Alisha thought it a ridiculous hour to be dragging her to breakfast, but she had to agree that she didn’t wish to hear Powell yell so early. When they arrived at the officers’ commons, the only occupants were the general and Colonel Logan. Seeing Logan’s smile as she walked in almost made getting up in the middle of the night worth it.

However, if she thought that breakfast was going to be fun, she soon learned the error of her belief. Between bites of breakfast, all three of them were intent on feeding her bites of regulations 13-14. The general harassed her on 14; the Colonel had 13, and Jack aided on both. They would read the reg, then quiz her on its meaning, and finally Jack would provide situations and ask her which regs were relevant and what she would do.

The only thing that made the exercise tolerable was that Jack’s examples were always funny. “You’re on leave, having a nice day in the Capital, when suddenly you see a Ryder land right smack in a crowd of people on Hathworth street. Worse yet, he is completely nude. What regs have been touched upon and what is your course of action?”

“First, I ensure no civilian has been injured by his action. Then with my own money, I purchase an Indian shawl from the street vendor and order the soldier to wrap himself up. I then get the catcher out of the street because it’s a traffic hazard—”

“The regs, Alisha…” Logan reminded her.

“Reg 13.89…3?” she stated without certainty. “Except during battle conditions all effort should be made that no civilian is harmed or injured during flight exercises.”

“How do you know he’s not part of a battle squad?” Jack asked.

“This one I’ve got. Reg 3.342 states that all soldiers must be properly geared for battle. Clearly, he was not. Reg 2.67 states that on-duty officers must be in uniform. Finally, Reg 14.2…67…no, 66, says that when a soldier is not on duty and off Corps sites that his behavior is regulated by the laws and cultural standards of the place of occupancy. While nudity is not illegal in Capital, the street the soldier has landed on is mostly southern Baptist, so the sight of a nude soldier would be offensive to their cultural standards, which is why I bought him a shawl and ordered him to cover up. Reg 14.678 says that an officer is responsible for enforcing all regulations whether on or off duty, regardless of whether the offending soldier is directly under the officer’s command. That is also why I cleared the catcher, because causing a traffic obstruction is illegal in the Capital.”

“Yeah, but that is clearly never enforced,” Jack observed. “Just ask the vendor you bought the shawl from. He’s probably pulled his cart right in the middle of the street for better traffic business.”

“Reg 14.891 says the Corps is required to uphold and abide all laws currently instated, regardless whether they are enforced upon the general public.”

“That can’t be right,” Powell said and looked at his book.

“That’s what it says,” Logan observed.

“I think we should get that one rescinded as well,” Powell muttered.

Alisha nodded. “I think there are quite a few of the regs that need to be rescinded, but 14.891 is definitely one of them. It sounds good in theory, but what if a town controlled by the Drug Cartel passed a law that forbids flying or weaponry within city limits? They could dress it up real pretty: ‘Make our streets safe: ban guns.’ Show some scavengers sweeping down and stealing your groceries right out of your hands. So the town votes out the guns and flyers. Then the Cartel, which controls local enforcement, proceeds to ignore the laws and go on with their business, but now it’s a Corps-free zone. We can only send in ground troops, and they can’t carry guns.”

General Powell glared at Jack.

Jack reached behind him and grabbed paper and pen. Making a quick note, he finally looked up. “What other ones bother you?”

“Well, Reg 14.266…if that’s the ‘obey local cultural standards’ law.”

“It is,” Jack replied, “And the reason being much the same?”

“Sure. Cultural standards are difficult. For example, that law would prevent a female soldier from entering a quarter of Capital.”

“But that reg only applies when they aren’t on duty,” the general objected.

“Yes, but let’s say I walk from Hathworth Street three blocks down to Melborne, wearing these fatigues. I have violated some cultural standard on each block. Didn’t hurt anyone, and normally no one would ever complain. But what if they decided to make an issue and beat me with their god sticks…or worse drag me down into a cellar and leave me there until their God has forgiven me for my transgression? According to this Reg, the Corps can’t do a thing. When we are off duty, it cedes its control and protection over to local governments and even more frightening, local cultural standards.”

Jack didn’t even wait for the general’s nod, he just wrote it down on the sheet.

By the time Alisha had finished her ‘what ifs,’ most of the Regs in 13 and 14 were on the list.

“Who the hell approved these?” the general demanded.

A snippet from book 2 Scavenger Falters

Here's a bit between Alisha and her best friend, Jack.

Jack gently pulled her into his arms. “I would have retrieved your catcher if it had been nothing more than regulation gear. He’s just mad because I had the opportunity to do it and he didn’t.” Jack paused and then added, “And maybe because you were coming on to me shamelessly.”
“I was not!” she countered, angry that her plan had been so transparent.
“I’ve seen enough flirting to know it when I see it. You were definitely hitting on me. Now either you’ve changed your mind and you do want to sleep with me, or you and Logan had a fight this morning and you wanted to make him jealous.”
Alisha leaned her head into Jack’s chest. “I don’t want to sleep with you, Jack!” she growled with certainty.
“That’s good, because if you were seriously coming on to me, we’d have a problem.”
She glared up at him. “Am I that repulsive?”
“Not at all,” he assured her, stroking her cheekbone. “You are absolutely breathtaking, but my heart already belongs to someone else.”
“Then why are you so nice to me?” she demanded.
“Because I think you are the most extraordinary person I’ve ever met and I enjoy your company immensely.”
Alisha gave him an apologetic smile. “Thanks. I think you’re pretty swell too…as a friend.”
“I know. Your heart’s taken as well. But these old guys, they don’t cave easy.”
Alisha was on the verge of denying it was the colonel, but she hated lying to Jack, and he wouldn’t have believed her denials anyway. He knew her too well. “Is it that obvious?”
“Actually, no. You’ve got the general convinced there’s nothing going on, and he’s a sharp old bird, always looking out for that sort of trouble.”
“Then how’d you figure it out?”
“Give me credit! I’m a brilliant visionary, able to pull together bits of intel, and develop the enemy’s strategy—no, wait, that’s you. Well, then it’s probably because the speakerphone was still open when Logan confessed he loved you.”

Liza O'Connor shares a snippet with pics of Scavenger's Mission

This scene occurs after Logan's rogue Captain DC attempts to kill Alisha during her first day as a cadet. He clearly doesn't like showoffs & young women who refuse him sex. Until this occurred, Logan did not realize the danger his entire crew had lived with for years under DC's reign. He rescues Alisha and has her soak her injured knee in his tub while he opens a case against DC, only not one of his crew will tell what really happened.

In his entire career, Logan had never felt so completely disgusted with himself. He had let this bastard terrorize his squad for three years. There had to have been signs if he’d only looked.
He sighed. He might as well have spent his days fishing the Cully for all the good he had done his squad.
He shut down the interview program. Briefly looking over his emails, he saw MAC had also issued him an order to report for assessment, probably triggered by the stress levels of his squad. MAC, no doubt, wanted to know what the hell he was doing to the poor flyers.
Nothing—that’s what he’d done for them—not a damn thing.
He forgot to knock when he entered the bathroom to check on Alisha, but she didn’t complain. In fact, as he knelt down to check on her leg, she reached out and touched his cheek.
“You look like hell.”
“That from a girl who’s black and blue,” he muttered.
“Actually, I feel pretty good now. Except I’m starting to prune up.”
Logan gently tugged opened the gash on her knee and studied it under his laser light.
“Are the interviews not going well?”
“What makes you ask that?”
“Well, you’ve looked gloomier every time you’ve come in to check on me, and now you look downright bleak.”
Logan turned the mirror he was using to assess the wound onto his own face. “This is how I always look.”
“No, there’s a difference. If you want to talk about it—”
“If I had anything to talk about, I sure as hell wouldn’t be telling my problems to one of my crew.”
Logan regretted his words. Had she struck him in return, he wouldn’t have blamed her. He’d sent her out to die today. If she had the charity to care about his day after the one she’d just had, it didn’t give him a reason to bite her head off.
Logan eased her leg back into the water, shut down the Jacuzzi, and opened the drain. When he reached down to help her out, she gave him a sulky glare.
A well-deserved glare, Logan conceded. He sighed and knelt down so he faced her. “I’m sorry for being short. I’m about as angry with myself as I’ve ever been, but that’s no reason to bite your head off.”
Alisha put her arms around his neck. For a moment he thought she was hugging him, but finally realized it was so he could lift her out of the tub. He placed his hands on each side of her waist and raised her until she could stand on her good foot. He tried to step back, but Alisha held firm to his neck.
“Why would you be angry at yourself?”
All too aware of her beautiful naked body, he attempted to unclasp her arms from around his neck.
“It wasn’t your fault,” she insisted, resisting his tugging.

Logan increased the pressure, finally breaking her grip and detaching her, being careful he didn’t cause her to lose her balance and fall. He handed her a towel, which, to his relief, she wrapped around herself.

(That should give you a hint as to how terrible life is for  debutante...)

When Logan read Philly his orders to report to MAC, the flyer nodded and apologized.
“For what?”
“You have no idea what this inquiry is like for us.”
“Evidently not. I would think it would be simple. Tell the truth and get rid of your problem.”
Philly whispered so softly, Logan could barely hear him. “But what if that doesn’t happen? What if the problem remains and now wants payback?”
“You have to have faith in the system, soldier.”
“The system doesn’t always protect a lowly flyer, sir. In this case, it may not even protect you.”
“Are you threatening me, Philly?” Logan asked in surprise.
“No, sir! I would never… I think the world of you. You’re everything a flyer should be. It’s my goal to be like you. I only meant there are some people who defy control and can twist situations to their own benefit.”
“You have no reason to fear DC anymore, Philly.”
“I want to believe you, sir, but…”
“But what?” Logan prompted when Philly seemed reluctant to finish the sentence.
Philly glanced at the bathroom door. “You weren’t even able to protect her, sir.”
His comment made Logan angry. Not only had he failed to protect Alisha, but his entire crew believed a personal relationship existed between himself and Alisha, and worse yet: that he thought her far more important than any of them.
“I can’t tell you what to believe, Philly, but understand this. My squad is very important to me, and as a member of my squad, Alisha Kane is important but no more so than you or Jersey or Ginnie. I’ll admit I’ve failed to protect all of you from DC. However, I had no idea what was going on until Alisha arrived. She’s the first of my crew to tell me the truth.”
Philly grimaced at his words but held his ground. “She almost died for that, sir. The only thing that saved her was some incredible flying. If it had been me, I would have died on the first stall-out.”
Logan sighed. “I get your point. And once we get this behind us, you’ll find I’m going to be far more involved in my crew, no matter how many complaints of interference my captain sends. But Philly, when you report to MAC, tell the absolute truth. It’s your only chance to get out from under this and get on with your career.”

Liza O'Connor shares How to Motivate Soldiers in Scavenger's Mission

How to Motivate Soldiers
General Powell likes for his men to stand out and sparkle. So after a battle his approbations and punishments tend to be heavy handed. However, in the Ridge battle, which would have been a disaster had Alisha not been able to teach fifteen Ryders how to perform a vertical drop in less than an hour of training, he declared that everyone did a superb job except for Colonel Sparkes. Sparkes he ran through a meat grinder for not knowing information about the Drug Cartels. It didn’t matter this was the first time MAC had sent them after a Cartel.  But then it was the first time a cartel had taken over the Wind Farms to store their drugs. MAC depends on the electricity from those Wind Farms, so it wanted the nest of vermin removed. But neither MAC nor any Ryder comprehended what they were going up against. Only Senna knew a bit from the month she spent with Denny on the streets. He knew everything about anything that might improve his chances of surviving one more day.

Sparkes sighed and stood up. “Can’t say I’m looking forward to this one. The general has forewarned me I’m in for a public beating.”
Alisha looked up in outrage, but before she could protest, Sparkes stopped her. “For my initial battle plan and for failing to get proper intel on the situation.”
“That’s not fair! He obviously didn’t know about Wednesday being market day either. And the plan we took into battle was a complete and absolute success.”
Logan agreed with her arguments. He hadn’t known any more than Sparkes about “market day”. Drug raids were new. For years they’d been doing nothing but fighting terrorists and scavengers. This had been their first drug raid. Still, the speed with which Alisha came to Sparkes’ rescue caused a distinct tension in his stomach.
“Yes, and he took that into consideration, so I won’t lose my rank, but I will take a beating. It’s important for the men to know you can’t just perform well some of the time. You must do so all of the time.”
Alisha turned to Logan. “Under the same criteria, I shouldn’t receive any commendations either.”
“That’s true,” Logan said. “However, to not give you a commendation, the general would have to explain to his men what you did to undo your tremendous contributions of the day, and he doesn’t wish to officially charge you with disobeying an order. So, for the benefit of the troops, you will receive your commendation.”
“That’s not fair treatment. If he’s going to hold Colonel Sparkes responsible for intel he didn’t know, then he should hold me responsible for orders I disobeyed.”
Her continued defense of Sparkes pissed him off. “He feels your rapid escalation to captain may have left you unprepared to make good decisions under stress. It is my duty to train you as quickly as possible. And any future failure on your part will be seen as a failure on my part as well, so when I say you will accept your commendations today without incident, I hope you understand it’s an order and not a request.”
“Yes, sir.” She lowered her eyes.
“Then go to the mess hall and round up the squad. I’ll be down directly,” Logan snapped.
