Meet my Young Adult and New Adult novels by Liza O'Connor

Okay, weird moment. All 3 blogs I'm promoting today are created by me. I didn't plan for them to fall on the same day, they just did that because most of my visitors do not wish to have a Sunday blog.
So here is why I look vain and self-centered today:

A Blog about my young adult book Rana: Teenage Queen.  It’s so good, that even adults want to read it.

RANA: TEENAGE QUEEN @Liza0Connor
If Rana can place her hand over a person’s heart, she can discover what they feel.

2) Next is more data I’m collecting about Titan to help me write book two of the unpublished Titan Series.
The big question is can we make Oxygen on Titan? Are the ingredients to do so there?
The answer is yes! We just need a sturdy structure to live in, say the big ship we arrive in, because baby it’s cold outside. But as we convert the methane into water and carbon dioxide (the plants will be happy with the later) then we can get Oxygen from the water, all the while increasing the temp of the planet as we buff up it’s already thick atmosphere. There will no doubt be consequences over time, but Earth is doomed. The brightest of the human race are being moved to Titan.  (Other people are going to Mars.)

3) I discovered I have many books that qualify as Young or New adult. I didn’t write them for the young adult market. I don’t give any consideration to genres/ages when writing. I just get a story in my head and write it.  These aren’t all the young peeps I’ve ever written, they are just the better behaved ones that might qualify as suitable for young adults.  However, I would never talk down to any of my readers, so I treat them like smaller sized adults. Since I never had children, I never became a mom. Therefore, I am just an adult kid, and I certainly don’t wish to be talked down to.
Thus, these are books for all ages, but happen to have one or more young people starring in them.
And thus, concludes what appears to be Liza O’Connor’s vainest day of marketing.

One of them was actually the first book I published through a publishing house. It's about an old woman who has cancer and decided to off herself, only she wakes up in a hospital, pissed she'd failed at this one simple task. Then she realizes something is wrong. There are strangers in her hospital room, rich people.  It takes her a while to realize what happened, but somehow, she is now residing in the body of teenage age girl. She knows if she tells them who she really is, they'll throw her into a mental ward, so takes on the challenge of being a teen again. Can't be that hard, right?
Ha!

Saving Casey
by Liza O'Connor

I was told by a short term Rom Critter that the book was unpublishable. So naturally, stubborn me, chose it as the first book to publish, and within three months and two rejections, I had a publisher. So here is some advice. NEVER let anyone else throw crap on your dreams. That particular critter thought she knew everything, but she didn't. She was just a dream-stomper and left soon after because the Rom-Critters are NOT dream stompers. We are a very positive group of writers.

Fortunately, a well-published author agreed my book was really good and gave me the encouragement to continue on.
 ***
The next book I published was a New Adult book with crazy misbehaving men-childs and a paranormal twist. It's funny and I loved it. It got picked up at the first publishing house I sent it to.

Ghost Lover
by Liza O'Connor

***
At this point, I realized I would be economically better off if I published my own books exclusively to Amazon. So I located an editor, who also did fabulous cover and gave it a try with a Young Adult who grows up over the five book series. Book 1 Worst Week Ever is THE funniest book I've ever written. I call it a Disaster Romance.

It is also my best selling novel by far.

Worst Week Ever
by Liza O'Connor

***
My Victorian Sleuth series has New Adult characteristics. It's fun, Vic is a 21 yr old woman, pretending to be a young man, because frankly, the life of a Victorian woman sucks! She wants to do interesting things! So she becomes the apprentice to the greatest Sleuth of the times: Xavier Thorn. (Never call him Sherlock Holmes!!!) This is my longest running series and my personal favorite. However, book one has some adult topics, so it's for mature New adults and above.

The Troublesome Apprentice
by Liza O'Connor

By this point, I had begun creating my own covers to reduce my costs. If you don't start making money by year three, the IRS will declare your efforts a hobby.
You do NOT want to be declared a hobby! Publishing

Recently, I wrote a Young Adult about a 16 and a half young lady (half fairy/half human) who is the daughter of the King and Queen of Stronghold. Sadly, both her parents die at the beginning of the story, leaving her to claim her right to not just her throne, but also of the hold that had attacked hers. Declaring her right to be Queen and taking control turned out to be two very different matters. But Rana is determined to create the finest hold on the planet Hope.

It's an uplifting story to empower young readers. You can do more than you think!

Rana: Teenage Queen
By Liza O'Connor

Soon another New Adult story will arrive in August. It's about a young man who just wants to be a championship bullrider, but that is harder than he ever imagined. He's having terrible luck in his girlfriends. His parents die. Then he get injured. Yet, after ever slam, he gets himself up. And eventually his dreams will come true beyond his imagination, but he had to stay strong through the hard times to get to the great times.

Slammed
By Liza O'Connor

***

And finally, but not least, is my Scavenger's 3 book series. 200 years in the future, after the terror wars change everything about earth. Alisha is a 21-year-old Debutante turned street girl turned scavenger and finally becomes a SkyRyder. She flies better than any Ryder in the Corp.

Scavenger's Mission
by Liza O'Connor

I hope you enjoyed this walk through some of my 'younger age appropriate' books. I do have more coming. I try very hard to give all my readers something that they might light in all my many genres.

There are other books a young or new adult might enjoy such as Book 1 of the Multiverse series, call the The Gods of Probabilities. I originally named it Drogan, but then decided that didn't match the series, so I renamed it. (Honestly, I probably should have kept it at Drogan.)

While Lydia Bennet in Untamed & Unabashed is only 16, I still do not classify it as young adult, nor New Adult. Turns out Lydia is a wild child.  Oddly when she matures a bit more and gets rid of Wickham, she become a very fine adult in book two, The Duchess Lydia (Coming in November)

Rana: Teenage Queen by Liza O'Connor

Troubles that humans brought to Hope
Not all humans are created equal. In fact, some of us shouldn’t have been created at all. While most of the colonists who traveled to their third planet were good people, a few were pure evil. And what is worse, those evil males’ dominant DNA left no chance of a son or daughter being anything but evil as well. No matter the pairing, their DNA would dominate all offspring.

Had the fairies been aware of their existence among the colonists, they would have destroyed them at once, but many of the evil men hid their dark souls. However, their clever and ruthless nature enabled them to become king of their holds, and others to spread out among other holds and took control of all businesses within a hold. These men called themselves the Black Mafia.

BLURB

Rana is only sixteen when she becomes queen. Her first challenge is to quell an internal coup while a massive army storms the gates of her castle. Her enemies believe her to be a child, but she has powers they’ve never suspected. She also has great dreams for her people, and she will do whatever is necessary to make them happen, even marrying a prince she does not want.

EXCERPT
Rana pushed in. “King Allan, I am only slightly knowledgeable about Firehold. If they lose their army, how will that impact their hold?”

“Can you not get your history lessons later? My father needs his rest!” Seren snapped.

King Allan stopped his son’s rant. “This decision cannot wait, Seren. I have ordered my general to kill them all, but Rana’s question gives me pause. I will tell you more about the hold, but let me talk to my general first.”

The screen went blank.

“What now!” Seren yelled.

“Your father has placed us on pause,” Ditter explained and pressed his hand on Seren’s shoulder. “King Allan is alive. Just relax. All is well.”

He then looked at Rana. “Firehold does not have a separate army. All the men fight, as well as most of the women who are not pregnant or have babies. Their hold began as a prison where the original colonists sent those they felt were damaging their chance of survival. Unfortunately, as the number of inmates grew, the more violent the group became, and in the tenth year of its existence, they broke free.”

Rana was shocked that her history classes mentioned none of this.

“They immediately attacked the closest holds, since they had neither food nor water. None of the holds had soldiers back then. Even their police forces were very small.” His eyes darkened with despair. “Only a few women survived the invasions, and I’m certain they would have preferred to die.”

Seren frowned. “Why was I not taught this in history?”
“Because a truce was made with the prisoners that nothing would be mentioned of their past if they would stop killing. Instead, each hold agreed to accept twenty of the men into their own, find them work, and ‘reform’ them.”

“Then why is there a Firehold?”

“Because these men did not wish to reform. So they created a new hold. They are the reason all holds have armies now. They are also the reason why all holds have corruption within their ranks.” He then smiled at Collins. “Only your general is very determined to purge the cancer from your holds.”

She appreciated the approbation of her general, but remained focused on Ditter. “Has any good person ever come from Firehold?”

“No, genetically, they are programmed to prey on the weak.”

When the King returned, his brow was furrowed. “Since it is your soldiers who prevents the Firehold army from retreating and saving themselves, you should have a part in the decision I’ve made. So I’ve asked my general to stop eliminating the Firehold army until I can explain the reason for my seemingly heartless action.” He closed his eyes a moment and breathed in deep. “Every year we lose about a hundred good, hardworking men who carry our crystals to other holds. We also lose the crystal, but the pointless loss of the men is what angers me the most. Firehold has no reason to kill my drivers. They are told not to resist if they are held up by thieves. But they die all the same, in gruesome and painful manners such as having their skin pulled from their flesh while they are still alive.”

The idea of being alive while someone ripped off her flesh made Rana tremble in horror.

Seren covered her hand as he spoke. “Father, Rana does not need to hear this. She is barely a woman.”

“I agree with you, King Allan” Rana spoke, ignoring Seren’s insulting words. “They should all be eliminated. It will be better for the prosperity of our holds.”

Heaven? Not so much. Scavenger Vanishes, Bk 3 snippet

When Alisha woke, she thought she was in heaven. Everything was white. As she focused on the fluorescent lighting, she changed her mind.
“Good, you’re awake,” Sandy said as she placed a thermometer in Alisha’s mouth. “That was a pretty stupid stunt you pulled last night.”
Alisha stared in confusion as Sandy proceeded to give her a lecture on hypothermia. When the medic finally pulled the thermometer from Alisha’s mouth, she tried to sit up. “How did I get here, and what were you told happened to me?”
Sandy gave her one of those “don’t even try to pull the wool over my eyes” looks. “You were brought in by several of your young men friends, who said that while giving them lap dances you had started shivering uncontrollably.”
“Lap dances!”
“Look,” Sandy said. “I don’t give a damn if you screw every man in this camp. In fact, it’s rather refreshing to hear of a female Ryder with a worse reputation than Jack’s. However, take some advice. It’s winter. If you want to do lap dances, don’t do them outside in the buff. You don’t have enough body fat to protect you from the cold.”
Alisha was speechless. She was going to kill Benson.
“Now, your captain’s here to take you back to your quarters. I need this room in a half hour. Anything you wish to do before that is not my concern as long as you keep your activity limited to the exam table, and don’t play with the supplies.”
The second Benson entered the room, Alisha hit him with a jar of cotton swabs. “You told the medic I was giving you a lap dance?”
Benson rubbed his chest where the jar had struck. “It was all I could think of. Don’t throw anything else, and I’ll explain,” he promised.
Alisha couldn’t imagine any explanation that would satisfy her, but she let him approach and try.
“I knew you were going into hypothermia, but if Colonel Dryer were implicated, I’d be done for. The colonel would no doubt receive a reprimand for his part in it, but he’d still be my colonel. Except now he’d be a pissed-off colonel, and I’d be his rabbit. So I had to come up with something the medic would believe that in no way implicated the colonel but would explain how you came to be wearing no clothes. Given your reputation, I said lap dances.”
“What reputation?” Alisha demanded.
“Well…” Benson smiled awkwardly. “You know…”
“No,” Alisha replied. “Tell me.”
“Well, first there was Colonel Logan, then you dropped Logan for Sparkes, which we all understood, then there was Ben, then there was you and Colonel Logan in the tunnel, before Sparkes found you. Then you and Logan right before he left, and then Tucker in tunnel this morning.”
“You can stop now,” Alisha said. No wonder the medic had believed Alisha wanted to sleep with every man in the camp. Rumor had it that she had slept with every man in the camp. She sighed. “So now we add lap dances to the pile of BS.”
“I didn’t see what harm it could do.”
“No, you’re evidently right. My reputation is pretty well dragging the bottom. I must be the biggest joke in the Corps.” She looked up at the ceiling, trying not to cry.
“No!” Benson assured her. “We know you’re something special. Normal conventions don’t apply to you, any more than normal aerodynamics or Corps regulations. You do your own thing and we just watch and marvel.”

Snippet from Scavenger Falters

Alisha pushed her way through the crowded mess hall and climbed up on a table. Standing taller than the men for once, she had little trouble getting the troops’ attention and silence. “It has come to my attention that this fort still keeps dogs.”
A few snickers in the far corner got her quick attention. “I will remind each of you that reg 3.354 forbids the practice. But then you all know that. So I will tell you something else. It. Is. Wrong!” She displayed her anger in each separate word. “The Corps is not just a job. It is your family. And what type a family takes their new additions, their children, and beats, rapes and sodomizes them for the first year of their lives?”
The room was deathly quiet as she continued. “On my first day as a Ryder I was the dog, and I was nearly killed when I was purposely stalled out at three hundred feet over the Wind Farms Ridge. And before you say ‘so what’, think about how many of you would be standing here today if I had died before the Ridge and Broadtown battles?
“All of you have probably been a dog. That’s what makes the continuance of this behavior so horrible. You personally know how hurtful it is. Nobody will admit it, but you know the violence can go too far. You know Ryders who have died. So I’m telling you now. The practice of making dogs stops today! And captains, I hold you personally responsible for the health and well-being of every member of your squad. If I even suspect that someone under your care is being abused, I will come down on you so hard, you will long for the anger of the general. Is that understood?” she asked softly.
The dead silence gave no reply.
“The colonel is waiting for a reply, captains,” General Powell said from the door.
“Sir, yes, sir!” The reply came immediately.
“I hope the slowness of your response was because you were in shock at the realization of the monstrosity of this practice each of you has participated in. Because if you only replied because I prompted you, then your time as captain will be very short-lived. And I don’t just mean at this fort.” The general entered the commissary and walked to the table where Alisha stood.
“We’ve all been the dog,” he continued. “I was one, myself, when I was a cadet. But until today, I’d forgotten the horror of that year: the beatings, the abuses. When my year was up, I put it behind me. I convinced myself it made me a stronger soldier. But it didn’t make me stronger. It just made me hate a couple of officers for the next forty years.”
The remark got several nervous chuckles from some of the men.
The general was not smiling, however. “We are at war, gentlemen, and our enemy is well financed, clever, and determined. If Colonel Kane’s reasons have not convinced you that the practice of dogs must stop, then let me try one more reason. We can’t afford to waste Corps resources. Had Colonel Kane died during her time as a dog, the war would be over now. And every man here would be nothing more than a glass-framed picture on his mama’s mantel.”
The general let his words sink in for a moment and then continued.
“Now, is there any soldier here that thinks I’m not dead serious that the days of dogs have ended?”
The reply was instantaneous. “Sir, no, sir.”
“Consider this a part of the new world, gentlemen. No dogs, no rabbits, no nothing! You will treat your newest members with the same dignity and respect you expect from your own commander.” He looked up at Alisha. “Sorry for stealing your thunder, Colonel. Is there anything you’d like to add?”

“No,” Alisha said. “I think they’ve gotten the message.”

Snippet from Scavenger Falters

Alisha struts her stuff!

Alisha shot up in a perfect vertical lift and within a few seconds, disappeared from view. Logan knew she’d go all the way to five thousand. It didn’t matter if they couldn’t see her. To pass the test, the troops would be required to go to five thousand feet, so, she’d do it as well.

“She just hit five,” Gunny announced as he watched on radar.

That was damned fast! Logan had figured she wouldn’t hit it for another five minutes. No wonder she had disappeared by the time the smoke had dispersed during the Broadtown battle. She must have already been hovering at five.

Her descent looked to be a free fall until she hit three hundred feet. Then she slowed it down, pulled a rifle from her pack and aimed at the targets and mock fired, then returned the rifle to position and landed precisely on the same two-foot circle she had taken off from.

“She wanted to use live ammo in her rifle,” the general chuckled. “One lesson and she’s ready to take it on.”

“You were right not to let her. It’s better to keep the troops focused on her flying.”

They watched as she carried her catcher over to a twenty-foot wind block and placed it on the windless side. A second wind blocker was set up a hundred yards away.

Logan knew she had re-created the Broadtown compound, except made the distance between the walls about fifteen feet longer. Given that he was going to have to fly over that damned wall, he was grateful for the extra distance. This maneuver definitely favored the lighter flyer.

For Alisha the extra distance made the maneuver so easy that she had to force herself to remain low enough that her slats even touched the wall. Logan suspected he’d need those slats to clear the last two feet.

After clearing the wall, she halted her forward movement and snapped straight up until she came to one thousand feet. From there she tracked a perfect perpendicular line crosswind, then soared downwind, stopped again and performed the third leg to a perfect square. When she reached the final upwind leg, the troops were utterly still. They all knew it was impossible to fly upwind, but they all knew she could do it. Now they were going to find out how.

The crowd murmured as her catcher collapsed. To a Ryder, a collapsed catcher meant death. Alisha leaned forward until the tips of her slats pressed against her chest. She rode upwind into the hundred-mile wind on her slats, with her collapsed catcher streaming behind her. A split second before she reached the edge of her target, she re-engaged her catcher and, precisely on the corner, she lifted back up to a hundred feet and set off diagonally into the square, touching down on each numbered circle in its order. To accomplish this without going outside the square required some incredibly tight one-eighties, but she made them look deceptively easy. As she hopped from circle eight to nine, she released her harness and flew the last eight feet on momentum, landing precisely on the mark with her rifle magically in her hand ready to fire.

Retrieving her catcher, she performed a remarkably fast takeoff. This time, instead of soaring straight up, she held at a low altitude, tracking the same black line. When she reached the upwind side, she climbed to a thousand feet and released her catcher.

There was a collective gasp by the troop. Logan understood their horror. To a flyer, an accidental harness release at a thousand feet was certain death. Yet she made it seem no stranger than her prior head-wind dive, except this time she went far beyond the square’s boundaries.

There was a collective sigh of relief as she touched down and held her balance. Logan shook his head as he realized she had that damned rifle in her hand, pretending to shoot the various targets on her path. As she ended the maneuver, she leaned on the slats, turning her direction back to the training area. She still had enough momentum to pull to a stop before the general and gave him a snappy salute.

Logan smiled, although he felt a little ill. She made it look like child’s play, but he doubted he would find anything playful about learning these maneuvers. He noticed the troops were quiet as well. He knew exactly how they felt. Watching Alisha fly was a humbling experience.

Scavenger Falters, Book 2, Liza O'Connor

Welcome to Scavenger Falters

First, let me share the main characters.
They are the same as they were in book 1.

Meet Alisha
Unlike the rest of the SkyRyders, who had never tried to improve their Wind-Catcher over the last 60 years, Alisha saw great possibilities in modifying her catcher. These changes along with her natural talent made her skills far better than any of the other SkyRyders. So on her third day (after 2 battles which were won solely on her skills) MAC promoted her to Colonel responsible for teaching the rest of the SkyRyders how to fly.

Meet Colonel Logan

Logan reaffirms there can be no relationship between him and Alisha. She has an entire fort to teach how to fly better and he needs to learn her skills as fast as possible so he can become General of the East Coast. But can he do that? If he truly loves Alisha, can he deny the love between them?

Meet Jack Sparks
With the Broadtown Fort destroyed (book 1) space for colonels is at a premium at Capital Fort. Thus, Alisha is to bunk with Colonel Sparks. Colonel Logan is not happy and offers to bunk with Dryers so Alisha could have a room of her own, only General Powell refuses to change the room assignments. He assures Logan that the two would be too busy to get up to mischief. In truth, there is another reason why he's certain they won't be coupling rather than sleeping. And we'll find out why.

Meet General Powell
If he had a nickname, it would be Grumpy, but no one has the balls to give him a nickname. Even Jack hated the general when he first arrived. Powell has made every colonel other than Logan cry. He has a puritanical streak a mile wide, a blind eye to the making of dogs (abusing new cadets), and always demands more than is reasonable from his men.  And he hates women. Until he had to let Logan's people into the Capital Fort there has been no women in his fort. Fortunately, he is so amazed and enchanted by Alisha at first, that he appears to become a nicer general.

Scavenger Falters

Alisha Kane, the Corps’ best flyer, is promoted to colonel, in charge of teaching the Corp’s SkyRyders her extraordinary flying maneuvers. The man she loves, Logan, continues to place the Corps first and insists they both remain focused on their work. For Alisha, this means ferreting out the best flyers in a Corps that has systematically forced great flyers into mediocrity. Logan focuses on learning Alisha’s flying techniques so that he can become the hero the East Coast desperately needs. The result includes fractured ribs and broken hearts, but through it all they never relinquish their love of the Corps.

Excerpt

The day after the devastation of the Broadtown Fort

Logan woke to the stirring pleasure of soft kisses upon his face and a familiar hot body pressed against him. He opened his eyes, and upon realizing this was more than a pleasant dream, he escaped the bed.

“Alisha, what are you doing in here?” he demanded of the beautiful young woman who regularly tormented his dreams and presently resided in his bed.

“Waking you up.” She cocked her head to one side, causing her dark hair to cover her right shoulder. God, she looked so young and adorable fluttering those long eyelashes. “But before we can go any further, I need you to release me from a part of your order.” She climbed out of bed and put her arms around his waist. “The part forbidding me to engage in any physical or seductive actions toward you.”

Logan unwrapped her hands from around his waist and gently moved her farther away from him. “I can’t. The order remains.”

“But you love me!” she insisted. “You told me so last night before the mission!”

Logan sighed. He led her back to the bed and sat her down on the edge. “Alisha, I’ve always loved you. I think I may have loved you from the moment I set eyes on you.”

“It was the same for me!” she confessed.

He smiled and stroked her face. “But all that love doesn’t change the facts. I’m your commanding officer, I’m too old for you, and you can and will do better. My orders remain.”
